2011.06.28 – ScriptLance

ScriptLance

New Profile Pages

All user profile pages have been improved and are now located at a shorter share-friendly URL (scriptlance.com/freelancer/USERNAME). The new layout along with the new information available will make it easier for buyers to review qualifications of programmers.

Note to programmers: Your uploaded account image is now displayed with dimensions 120×90. View your profile and update your image if necessary.

Some of the new features:

  • Share your tag specific profile. (e.g. …/expertise/Graphic%20Design).
  • Share your tag specific reviews (e.g. …/reviews/Graphic%20Design). Add more tags as subfolders (e.g. …/reviews/Graphic%20Design/PHP).
  • Highlight one (or several) reviews by specifying the project ID in the URL (e.g. …/reviews?pid=1295552471). This displays the chosen project review first, followed by the rest chronologically. Add &pidx=1 to omit other projects.
  • Your rank is displayed for each tag that is important to you.
  • The number of users that have added you to their favorites’ list is displayed as “Likes”.
  • Contact and hire/invite links have been improved.

We hope this make it easier for all to do business on ScriptLance more efficiently.

ScriptLance Has A New Look!

Today we released the new version of the ScriptLance website design! It’s been long overdue, but finally, after months of work, it’s finally ready. This new design should make it much easier to navigate the site and encourage new business for all. I’m proud of it, and I’m happy that we can finally move on to upgrading other aspects of the marketplace.

I’d like to thank all the programmers and designers that worked on this update with us, as well as important feedback and tips I received on the forum and from ScriptLance staff.

There may be some minor bugs, so please notify us about any that you see while browsing the new site.

Project page and private messages page revamp

Some users have had difficulty finding different functions on the project. Others have gotten confused between the project page and the private messages page. Also, the current project page shows everything about the project. Since not all information is needed at different phases of the project, the page takes longer to load than necessary and ends up cluttering and confusing some users.

The project page and private messages pages have been revamped and combined into a single, new “look-and feel”. This reduces clutter, makes it easier for users to find other functions on the project page and it loads faster.

Control panel/shortcuts

The control panel and shortcuts are quick ways to access the most common things people do on projects. To reduce clutter, the employer/worker control panels and shortcuts are now shown collapsed (rather than fully expanded like before). To access them, the user clicks on one of these links at the top of the project and they expand to show the full array of options (just like before).

Tabs

Rather than showing all the information on one long page (which included much information that was not necessary in that phase), the project information has been split into tabs. These load only the information needed which reduces clutter and makes them faster loading. Also, they are Ajax enabled, so changing tabs does not require reloading the whole page, which again makes them faster to load.

Private messages

The “private messages” tab now integrates the formerly different “private messages” page into the same look and feel as the project. So when a user is on this page it is still easy for them to know where they are, as well as navigate using the familiar control panel/shortcuts and tabs from the project page.

Coming April 3 – More Search for Project Improvements. Find Project Leads Fast.

New Design Upgrades to the Project Search Page

Many of you sent valuable feedback following the release of the new Search for Projects design in November 2010. Based on your comments, we’re making several design upgrades to the search to help you find your ideal project leads faster and easier. On April 3, sign in to view the upgrades.

  • Viewed projects will have a gray background. After you view a project from the search, it will have a gray background. We hope this helps you easily find projects you have not yet seen when looking at the long list of available projects.
  • New, helpful icons will make it easy to see which projects to which you can apply, cannot apply, or have already applied.
  • All refinement tools will be on the left side of the page. Use these tools to filter by project skills required, budget, location, and more.
  • Enjoy a cleaner, more streamlined page design.

“My Project Leads” Helps You Find Project Leads Faster

Starting April 3, use the new My Project Leads area to find project leads easily. Projects that have a high chance of turning into your next freelance job will be grouped under My Project Leads. Simply review your project leads, and decide if you want to submit a proposal. Project leads include:

  • Project Invitations (sent by Employers).
  • Projects saved to your Watch List (from the project search).
  • Project Matches (sent by Guru when projects match your profile).

To find your project leads:

  • Sign in to your Freelancer account.
  • On the My Account page, locate the My Project Leads section (toward the center of the page).
  • Click the appropriate link to review your Project Invitations, Watch List or Project Matches.

On April 3, search for projects, and also find projects using the new My Project Leads area. Check out the design improvements and send us your feedback.

$1 NEFT Withdrawals

The new NEFT Withdrawal option will be lowered to only $1 during February, as part of the ongoing 10th anniversary celebrations. All Indian freelancers can greatly benefit from this fast and cheap method of receiving money directly into your bank accounts.

For all others, we have decided to continue the free certified membership offer for all new subscribers to the program.

New Tag Pages

We are happy to debut the new tag/category pages for ScriptLance, which provide more data useful to buyers and freelancers of the site! Click on any tag (e.g. PHP) to view its official page on ScriptLance, providing a list of recent projects, the top performing freelancers, and a trends graph for that tag.

The top freelancers for each tag will be determined by points, which are calculated similarly to your total rank. Although projects are not always tagged perfectly, the system is good enough so that the top freelancers can be accurately determined. We have made tagging a project easier than ever (see bidding page), so that if you notice any missing tags you can suggest them quickly.

The new tag rankings will soon appear in other areas of ScriptLance, such as profile pages. We believe the new tag rankings will help buyers find experts in specific fields, and will allow more freelancers to claim top rankings for tags important to them. Example: You may not rank highly overall, but you may be the top iPhone expert on ScriptLance, or the top AJAX expert. That will help more freelancers connect with more businesses, which is the ultimate goal of ScriptLance.

Point Calculation

Affecting the total rank and new tag rankings, we decided to count projects marked as completed, even if no rating was given yet. Although not given as much weight as a full 10/10 rating, this new rule will help more freelancers get ranked.

Update Your Profile Categories!

If employers are going to consider you for their job, they need to be able to effectively locate you. To make sure you stand out to the right employers, we’re improving the way contractors are categorized.

Starting Feb. 28, you will be able to update your profile to select the top 10 categories where you are most skilled and have the most interest in working. With this change, when employers do a contractor search, you won’t get lost amongst contractors who do not have a specific skill and expertise in that category. Keep in mind, you can still apply to any job you feel you are qualified for, regardless of your top 10 profile categories. We know some contractors have a broad skill set and want to select many more categories – but we’ve found that contractors who specialize in a few types of work are able to command higher wages and build better long-term relationships with their employers. Give it a try and see if you start standing out!

Note: starting Feb. 28, all profiles with more than ten work categories on their profile will automatically be reduced to the top categories based on recent work and application history.

We’ve completed over 900,000 projects through this marketplace with over €59,194,868 EUR paid out to freelancers to date.
